This article will attempt to clarify what Genesis Ch1 says about the creation and is, therefore, a first step towards assessing the extent to which the scientific account of origins and the Biblical account are compatible. My education was in the Earth Sciences at the University of London. I have to say that my background does help me to understand the first chapter of Genesis. However I am no longer up to date in the subject and I would welcome contributions from those whose knowledge of latest developments is greater than mine.
