INTRODUCTION TO HEBREWS

I have used the following commentaries to help me understand what is written in the Epistle to the Hebrews:
(a) The Pulpit Commentary
(b) The Message of Hebrews by Raymond Brown
(c) The Daily Study Bible by William Barclay
(d) Hebrews: Be Confident by Warren W. Wiersbe

My main aim is to share what the book means to me. The writer is addressing the problem of Jewish Christians reverting to Judaism. Real Christians were losing faith in Jesus. It is not a letter which supports the view that once a Christian always a Christian. Rather the writer accepts the very real possibility that Christians can end up lost if they stop believing in Jesus. So the letter is written to bolster the faith of the Jewish Christians and to show the superiority of the New Way. The reality is that Christians are still abandoning Christ and many are sometimes tempted to do so. In England the Church is in decline and rural churches like the one to which I belong are in danger of dieing out. In such circumstances the Epistle to the Hebrews warns, counsels, challenges and reassures. It has been a help to me.

In the series of talks which follow all quotations are from the N.I.V. of the Bible.
