The increased oxygen content of the atmosphere and the lower temperatures facilitated the arrival of oxygen breathing fish and birds. Fish certainly make an early appearance in the fossil record. The same cannot be said of birds. They appear later. However they do appear before the sudden rise in importance of mammals in the early Tertiary period.
